The Pat, Pat, Pat and Other Thoughts on Hugging

Wrapping up a lovely brunch on Sunday with a few of my closest girl friends, we stood on the sidewalk for a few moments to say our goodbyes.

“It’s like we’re all waiting to hug each other,” my friend Jodi quipped.

“Well, you know that’s not on my mind,” I retorted.

Everyone laughed. They know I’m not a hugger.

Before you get all judgy and assume I need counseling for some deep-seeded aversion to affection, let me explain. It’s not that I don’t hug people. I just subscribe to a self-imposed hugging etiquette that’s evolved over time.

Know Your Target Audience

Know your target audience. That’s the first lesson taught in TV news, and one I learned many times since switching to marketing as a career.

Perhaps that’s why this experience, related to my father fighting lung cancer, stands out clearly six years later.

The Art of Doing a Header

If you read that headline and thought this would be about sex, get your mind out of the gutter. If you thought it was about graphic design, sorry, I can’t help you. This is story about falling and other not-so-graceful feats of klutziness – my expertise.

Calling all Crazies: Freak Magnet Here

My reputation can be summed up in two words: freak magnet. This isn’t a self-proclaimed status. As reputations go, I’d rather be known as witty, pithy or even nerdy. But if you ask my friends and family, they’ll most certainly tell you: “Kim is a freak magnet.”

Magnet Collection

That opinion is so universal that they refer to my experiences as “Kim stories.” God love them! They are a collection of day-to-day occurrences that make up my life, such as: Continue reading

My Meh 2013 According to Facebook – Part 2

…continued from “My Meh 2013 According to Facebook Part 1”

Sitting on my couch, a glass of my favorite Sauvignon Blanc in hand (and another one already in my belly), I clicked on my Facebook 2013 Year in Review for the second time.

I cringed once again at the selection of photos rotating at the top. Most were boring. Many were unflattering. Only one reflected what I thought was truly memorable from the past year. Continue reading

My Meh 2013 According to Facebook – Part 1

A few weeks back I got the friendly notification from Facebook that my Year in Review was available. I happily clicked it remembering the fun I’d had reliving 2012. My expected joy quickly turned to horror.

There, rotating in Facebook’s photo montage, were a handful of images of some fun but not extremely exciting times in my life.
